Alcoutim is a town and a municipality in southeastern Portugal near the border with Spain. The population in 2011 was 2,917, in an area of 575.36 km². It is the least densely populated municipality in Portugal. The administrative center is the town of Alcoutim, located at the extreme eastern part of the municipality on the Spanish frontier, just across the Guadiana River from the Spanish town of Sanlúcar de Guadiana in Huelva Province.
The Moorish Alcoutim Castle, located in the municipality, dates from the 14th century.
The municipality is located in the northeast corner of the Faro District.

Sanlúcar de Guadiana is a Spanish municipality in the province of Huelva, in the autonomous community of Andalucía. Belonging to the Andévalo region, it has a population of 422 inhabitants (2023).
Location
Its geographic coordinates are 37° 28′ N, 7° 28′ W. It is located at an altitude of 149 m above sea level, at a distance of 55 km from the provincial capital, Huelva.
History
Under the protection of the Taifa de Niebla, some Muslim groups settled in this area, although the origin of the current population had to be located in the middle of the century XIII, with the conquest of Sancho II of Portugal and the construction of a fortress. Being realengo lands, they will soon pass to the señorío of Gibraleón. Later, in the hands of Pérez de Guzmán, the title of villa was granted to him, thanks to Isabel Guzmán de Ledesma.
In the middle of the seventeenth century, Sanlúcar de Guadiana became responsible for supplying the Spanish troops stationed on the border with Portugal, due to the War of Independence of this country. This is when the bastion of San Gerónimo was built in 1642, although the castle of San Marcos continued in the same state as the previous siglo (see later), so it was not possible to avoid being taken over by the Portuguese troops at the end of it. conflict.
Throughout its history, the villa has suffered floods due to the overflow of the Guadiana River. The most devastating place in 1823 was when many houses were destroyed. Another place in December 1875.
However, his situation has also betrayed benefits. Passing on commercial routes, in the 19th century it became a center from which wood, pulp and jabon were exported.
Monuments
Castillo de San Marcos: border fortification located on a hill to the east of the town.
Church of Our Señora de las Flores: built under the siglo xvi, although the current building is subject to renovation under the siglo xviii. The plan is divided into three naves, with two side chapels and a choir at the top. It is covered with a craftsmanship. The mayor altarpiece, made of polychrome wood, is dedicated to Our Lady of Rábida, patroness of Sanlúcar de Guadiana. Final date of the siglo xviii and in recent times it was restored next to a school triptych.
