Salema is halfway between Cabo de São Vicente, the most southwestern point of continental Europe, and 20 km from the city of Lagos. The village is located in the Natural Park of Southwest Alentejo and Costa Vicentina - a natural reserve that stretches along the Portuguese southwest coast.
The delightful Salema Beach, magnificent, is a large sheltered bay: in winter, the sea approaches to the edge of the village. Along the beach, a promenade was developed.
The British newspaper The Guardian listed this blue flag beach in the top 50 of the most beautiful beaches in the world - it came in 15th place.
Footprints of an Ornithopoda (about 140 million years old) were found on the beach. This species of dinosaur was 1.5 to 2 m tall and were herbivores. The rock is 15 meters west of the wooden staircase - freely accessible.
