MONCARAPACHO
37° 05′ 05″ N, 7° 47′ 16″ W

Moncarapacho is a Portuguese village that was the seat of the extinct Parish of Moncarapacho in the Municipality of Olhão, in the District of Faro, a parish that had an area of 75.19 km² and 7,717 inhabitants (2011) and, therefore, a population density of 102, 6 inhabitants/km².

The Parish of Moncarapacho was extinguished (aggregated), and its territory was integrated into the then created Union of Parishes of Moncarapacho and Fuseta.

The town of Moncarapacho, in turn, had been elevated to the category of town in 1991.

Toponymy
There are many hypotheses regarding the toponymy of Moncarapacho. Here are some:

- It may have come from Monte do Carapacho. Carapacho is a Spanish word meaning carapace. This name was created due to the view of the sea, which looked like a shell. Later, Monte do Carapacho evolved and gave rise to the word Moncarapacho;

- Moncarapacho may have come from Cerro de São Miguel in the part where this hill is called Monte Escarpado due to it being high, steeply carved and without the slightest slope in that part. The name Monte Escarpado evolved into Moncarapacho;

-It may also have come from a lady who lived in Cerro de São Miguel where she worked with fabrics, making “doormats” that she sold. It was initially called Monte dos Capachos, later Montecapacho, which evolved into Moncarapacho.
