Algar Seco is a remarkable place on Lagoa’s coastline. t stands out for its unique limestone cliffs: a rocky ochre labyrinth heavily sculpted by the rain and sea.
The word “Algar”, from which the toponym “Algar Seco” originated, comes from the Arab term al-gár (the cave), or Phoenician-origin lalgar (abyss) and alludes to the profusion of geological forms that erosion has created here. Stricto sensu, an algar is a naturally formed well. In this particular case, Algar Seco originated from the coalescence of several algares, which throughout the ages widened and deepened.
We invite you to go along the 600-metre walkway and discover the peculiar Mediterranean vegetation of the cliffs, the diversity of coastal fauna and surprising views of the sea.
