ALGAR DE BENAGIL (Benagil Cave)

Sculpted over 23 million years by the forces of nature, the cave or cave of Benagil is one of Portugal's greatest natural wonders. It is close to the town of Carvoeiro and looks like a domed cathedral with a skylight (which is why it is a sinkhole and not a cave as is commonly said). There is a small beach inland, full of light. Considered by many to be one of the most extraordinary sea caves in the world, it has two arched openings and is only accessible from the sea. Here's everything you need to know for a visit:
Boats to the Benagil Cave
Most boats to the cave depart from Praia de Benagil, although there are also some from the beaches of Vale Centeanes and Carvoeiro, as well as from the pier in the city of Portimão. In July and August, it is possible to book tours from Albufeira, Armação de Pêra, Lagos, and Vilamoura. Some tours combine a visit to the cave with other attractions along the Algarve coast, passing through several spectacular caves and rock formations. These may also include dolphin watching and stops at isolated beaches, accessible only from the sea.
Each tour is different, so check your itinerary before booking to see if it actually includes a visit inside the cave, if that's what you want. Many boats just stop at the entrance for a minute or two to take photos and continue on to other locations. Due to currents and tides, the smaller the boat, the more likely it is to get close to the cave. Tour operators pay attention to the tides and the weather, so they can provide safe tours. In summer, tours are rarely canceled, but at other times of the year, cancellations are frequent, due to bad sea conditions and the unpredictability of the weather.
Prices vary depending on the itinerary, distance traveled, time of year, duration, and type of boat. On average, they cost €25 per person (sometimes much more). A very popular tour is the one offered by Santa Bárbara, a replica of a 15th-century Portuguese caravel that departs from the port of Portimão and offers morning and afternoon tours. The boats to visit the cave vary from simple fishermen's boats (which leave from Benagil Beach) to luxurious yachts. Most people choose the most economical options, but if you want to celebrate a special event or if you are on your honeymoon and want to surprise someone, opt for the more luxurious, private tours.
