Barão de São João is a Portuguese village in the municipality of Lagos, with an area of 51.85 km² and 895 inhabitants (2011). Its population density is 17.3 h/km², which allows it to be classified as a Low Density Area. The Lagos Zoological Park is located in this parish.

It was the seat of a parish that was extinct in 2013, as part of a national administrative reform, to, together with Bensafrim, form a new parish called União das Freguesias de Bensafrim and Barão de São João with its headquarters in Bensafrim.

Description and history

The human settlement in the Barão de São João area is very old, with the Pedra Branca Menhir being a testament to this occupation, part of the Neo-Calcolithic period. In the work Critical Glossary of the Main Monuments of the Museu Archeologico Infante D. Henrique, published in 1899 by Father Joaquim Pereira Botto, he refers to the gift of a type of Roman pickaxe to the Museum of Faro, by the seminarian Santos Grade, which may have been used in liturgical rituals. This piece had been found in the parish of Barão de São João, together with several fragments of amphorae.

The oldest records of the town of Barão de São João belong to the transition from the 16th to the 17th century and state that it had 54 residents. The parish has existed since at least 1629, the date of the oldest known documents. In 1758 it had 182 inhabitants.

On November 16, 2000, the Lagos Zoo was opened in this parish, which established itself as an important tourist and economic hub in the western Algarve. In 2013 it was added to the parish of Bensafrim. In June 2020, the Barão de São João National Forest was badly hit by a large forest fire, which devastated part of the municipalities of Lagos, Aljezur and Vila do Bispo.
