CACHOPO (TAVIRA)

Cachopo is a Portuguese parish in the municipality of Tavira, with an area of 197.56 km² and 471 inhabitants (2021 census). Its population density is 2.4 inhabitants/km², which allows it to be classified as a Low Density Area.
The parish of Cachopo is located in the mountainous area of the municipality of Tavira, more specifically in Serra do Caldeirão. It was part of the municipality of Alcoutim until around 1836.
The parish's economy is based on rainfed agriculture, livestock farming, beekeeping and cork production.
Demography
Despite representing 32% of the municipality's area, there is no correspondence in demographic terms, with the parish of Cachopo representing only 1.7% of the municipality's total population.
The characteristics of Cachopo's age pyramid reveal a marked aging both at the base and at the top, with a majority of the population over 65 years of age (50% of the total population), and a reduced weight of the population under 30 years of age. In 2001, the weight of the population in this age group represented 14% of the total resident population. The population over 65 years old was ten times larger than the population under 15 years old.
