BENAFIM (LOULÉ)

Benafim is a Portuguese village in the municipality of Loulé, with an area of 52.69 km² and 1,069 inhabitants (2011). Density: 20.3 inhabitants/km².

It was the seat of a parish, created on March 11, 1988, and extinguished in 2013, as part of a national administrative reform, to, together with Querença and Tôr, form a new parish called União de Freguesias de Querença, Tôr and Benafim with the headquarters in Querença.

Benafim is 5 km from Alte, 7 km from Salir and 19 km from Loulé, the county seat. Between Benafim and Salir stretches a plateau, known as Rocha da Pena. Alto Fica, Zimbral, Penina, Benafim Pequeno, Benafim Grande, Espargal, Nave dos Cordeiros and Quinta do Freixo are some of the localities belonging to the parish.

The town is divided into three zones: Benafim Grande, Benafim Pequeno, and Bairro Novo, the latter being the most recent, despite being around three decades old. Most of the houses built by emigrants are located in this area, with the other two forming the historic core of Benafim. It is also a parish with many emigrants, mainly from France, Germany, and Luxembourg.

In terms of social facilities, the town has a pharmacy, a medical center, a sports club (Sport Club Benafim), several cafes, a church, a cemetery, an ATM, a community center, a supermarket, a minimarket, two hairdressers, a real estate agency, a restaurant, a picnic area, an architecture office, a gas station, a primary school and a post office operating on the parish council premises.
