Budens is a municipality (Freguesia) in the district (Concelho) of Vila do Bispo, in the Faro district. It is home to 1,857 residents on an area of 46 km²
(April 2021).
Budens is a town and municipality on the Portuguese south coast, the Algarve. The municipality is located in the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park.
Story
Finds provide evidence of a prehistoric settlement, in particular the important Paleolithic excavation site in Vale de Boi and the Bronze Age burial site in Figueira.
A Roman-style villa was found here, on Boca do Rio beach.
The current town was first mentioned in the 16th century as an up-and-coming fishing town. Increasing pirate attacks made it necessary to build defenses. The other towns in the municipality also emerged at this time, except for the town of Figueira, which was already mentioned in 1374.
In 1925, some municipal areas were separated from Budens and have since formed the independent municipality of Barão de São Miguel.
Sightseeing features
Archaeological sites
There are, among other things, Dinosaur footprints, and a Bronze Age burial site can be seen in Figueira.
Vale do Boi is home to one of the most important Portuguese archaeological sites from the Paleolithic period.
The Roman villa, excavated in 1878, dates back to Roman times at the Ruínas Lusitano-Romanas da Boca do Rio archaeological site in Boca do Rio.
Fortresses
There are three fortifications in the municipality of Budens:
In 1632, the fortress Forte de São Luís de Almádena (also Forte da Boca do Rio) was built here to protect against the ongoing attacks of corsairs and pirates.
The ruins of the Forte de Burgau fortress in Burgau also date back to the 17th century. It was badly damaged in the earthquake of 1755 and was completely decommissioned after the Miguelist War in 1834.
The fortress Forte de Vera Cruz (also Forte de Vera Cruz da Figueira or just Forte da Figueira) in the municipality of Figueira was also built in the 17th century, but in connection with the War of the Restoration after 1640. It is also a listed building.
Miscellaneous
A main attraction for visitors is likely to be the beaches in the municipality, particularly Salema, Burgau, and the beaches of Figueira (Figueira and Furnas). In some places, you can still watch fishermen at work.
Some religious buildings are also among the municipality's architectural monuments. In addition to the modern church Igreja de Nossa Senhora de Fátima, built in 1961, in the Figueira district and two baroque chapels in the municipal towns, this is the parish church of Budens in the Rococo style, the Igreja Paroquial de Budens (also Igreja de São Sebastião after its patron saint).
The Santo António golf course is another attraction in the municipality.

Barão de São Miguel resembles many rural villages in the Algarve. Its housing stock mainly consists of small white houses with traditional chimneys, a domestic architectural style influenced by the Moorish occupation of the area up to the thirteenth century.[citation needed]
The village church was constructed in the sixteenth century and features a tower and just a single nave. Its baroque high altar is dedicated to the Archangel Michael.
Near to the N125 to the south of the village, lime kilns are to be found. These were originally constructed to supply the nearby city of Lagos.
