TAVIRA (ALGARVE - PORTUGAL)

TAVIRA
N 37.12363; W 7.64488

Tavira is a Portuguese city in the district of Faro, a region, and sub-region of the Algarve, with about 13 400 inhabitants. It is located in the Sotavento area (eastern Algarve).
The coast of the municipality of Tavira has some of the most beautiful beaches in the Algarve and Portugal, all of them included in the Ria Formosa Natural Park. The sea can reach very pleasant temperatures during summer and early autumn, which can be around 26 ° C in the hottest months. The beaches in the municipality are Lacém Beach, Cabanas de Tavira Beach, Ilha de Tavira Beach, Terra Estreita Beach, Barril Beach, and Homem Nu Beach.
The Ria Formosa occupies the entire coastline of the municipality, being separated from the sea by two dune bars: Cabanas Island and Tavira Island. In addition to the barrier islands, the estuary includes a set of channels, salt flats, and marshes.
Serra de Santa Maria is the name given to Serra do Caldeirão in the municipality of Tavira; there are several rounded peaks above 500 meters in altitude. All this low-lying mountain barrier prevents the influence of cold winds from the northern quadrant and weakens the rainy fronts coming from the northwest, thus helping to define the climate of the Algarve coast. Also, it constitutes a condensation barrier for the masses of moist air from the Gulf of Cadiz.

The Church of Nossa Senhora das Ondas, or dos Mareantes, also called the Church of São Pedro Gonçalves Telmo, is located in the parish of Santa Maria, in the city of Tavira, in Portugal.

Its origins date back to the reign of Manuel I of Portugal, built by the Confraria de São Pedro Gonçalves Telmo, formed by fishermen and sailors. For this reason, it was also known as the Church of Maritime Commitment.

In Renaissance style, it suffered from the 1755 earthquake and was partially rebuilt. In the main chapel is an image of São Pedro Gonçalves Telmo, protector of seafarers. Its ceiling features a perspective painting, and the rest of the decoration comprises Baroque-style works. It is also said that this church had a red silk banner, with the royal weapons embroidered in gold, and a caravel, a symbol of the Tavira Maritime Commitment, but which were stolen.
